The honest version

Cádiz is a compact old town on a peninsula, not a beach-hotel resort: the horse shows and sherry cellars are in Jerez, the whale-watching boats leave from Barbate, and the white towns are inland. We say where a tour starts and when a car is the more practical choice.

Guides & tips

Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How far is Jerez from Cádiz?

Well under an hour by commuter train; the road trip is of similar length. Jerez is where the horse shows and the sherry cellars are, so many listings start there. Check each meeting point.

Does Cádiz have beaches?

Yes. La Caleta sits between two old castles in the old town, and Playa de la Victoria is a long city beach on the western side. Both are within reach of the centre, without any tour.

Do whale and dolphin trips leave from Cádiz?

Our current listings leave from Barbate, near Cape Trafalgar, and from Tarifa, not from the city port. Sightings are never guaranteed, and wind or sea state can move a trip.

Can I visit Gibraltar or Tangier from Cádiz?

A Gibraltar day trip by bus is listed, with pick-up in Cádiz, El Puerto de Santa María or Jerez; bring a valid passport or ID for the border. The Tangier ferry trips in the booking feed leave from Tarifa or Málaga, so we do not list them here.

Is Seville a day trip from Cádiz?

It can be: trains take less than two hours. Seville has its own page on a sister site, and we do not list tours that start there.

Do I need a car in Cádiz?

Not for the old town, which is walkable and flat, and not for Jerez, which has a train. A car or a guided day trip helps for Vejer, Tarifa, Baelo Claudia and the white towns.
