Car hire in Cádiz: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 23, 2026 · 5 min read
The cheapest-looking car is not necessarily the cheapest rental. Before paying, open the terms and identify four separate items: the rental price, the deposit, the excess and any optional cover. The deposit is money blocked on a card; the excess is the amount for which the contract may leave you liable after covered damage. They are related, but they are not the same charge.
Compare Cádiz car-hire offers and their conditions, then save the chosen supplier’s terms rather than relying on the search-result headline.
CDW does not automatically remove the excess
Collision Damage Waiver, usually shortened to CDW, limits liability under specified conditions. It should not be read as a promise that every scratch, tyre, window, underbody or lost key is covered. The exclusions and the remaining excess come from the particular contract.
Extra protection sold online and a waiver offered at the collection desk can also work differently. One may reimburse an eligible charge after you submit documents; another may reduce what the rental company can charge directly. Read who provides the cover, what evidence a claim needs and which parts of the car are excluded. If the wording is unclear, ask the supplier in writing before collection.
The deposit and the payment card
The desk may place a temporary authorisation on the main driver’s card. Check the required card type, accepted card network, cardholder name and available limit. A debit card accepted for payment is not necessarily accepted for the deposit. The exact amount varies by car, supplier and protection package, so verify it in the booking conditions; guessing a typical figure could leave you unable to collect the vehicle.
Bring the main driver’s licence and the documents named in the voucher.
Extras that change the total
The fuel policy deserves a full line of attention. “Full to full” normally means returning the car with the same full tank, while other policies may involve fuel charges or service fees defined by the supplier. Photograph the gauge and mileage at collection and return.
Add every driver during booking or at the desk; an unlisted driver can create a serious contractual problem. Child seats, after-hours collection, one-way rental and crossing a border can each have separate conditions or fees. Never assume that permission to drive elsewhere follows automatically from having insurance.
Minimum age and young-driver surcharges differ between suppliers and vehicle groups. The booking page must confirm both the age rule and the charge for your chosen car. The same applies to licence-holding periods.
At the counter and before moving
Compare the desk agreement with the voucher before signing. Ask for the price and effect of any proposed addition, and decline it if you neither want nor understand it. Record existing damage in good light, including wheels, glass and roof, and make sure it appears on the checkout report. Keep the fuel receipt and return record until the deposit is released.
The safest comparison
Compare the payable total, the deposit you must be able to fund, the excess you accept and the protection mechanism you understand. A slightly dearer rate with suitable card and fuel terms can be the better booking. Check current Cádiz rental conditions before choosing, because these details belong to the individual offer, not to Cádiz as a destination.
